TIME TO SHUT DOWN THE ZOOS?

TIME TO SHUT DOWN THE ZOOS?

"Zoos as institutions are deeply problematic" claims writer Laurel Braitman. She challenges her readers to reassess the way humans keep animals in unnatural habitats, arguing that these conditions are leading to animal madness. Of all habitats she claims zoos are the worst example. nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11279349

Kept in smaller than their natural spaces, behaviours such as pacing, biting and hair pulling are all behaviours not seen in the wild.

Is there sufficient justification for zoos?

Most modern zoos offer improved living conditions than zoos of old. Zoos can help us learn more about the animal kingdom and often run important conservation and endangered breeding programmes.

But do these reasons justify the imprisoning of animals in unnatural habitats with the primary reason our entertainment?

What do you think?
